The fishing villages of Muros-Fisterra-Muxía

A program that for one day visits the most beautiful points of the Costa da Morte, the sharp end of the world that in winter as in summer presents its wildest and most inscrutable image. An outing that combines awe-inspiring spots with the culture and life style of Galician fishing villages.

Full program

The outing crosses three towns in the southern part of the Costa da Morte: Muros, Fisterra and Muxía. Before reaching Muros, we must stop at the summit of Paxareiras, a privileged observation point that offers a view of the entire coast. The first stop is Muros, with its genuine fishermen's quarter. The majority of these neighbourhoods succumbed first to urban decadence and later to the pressure of development. Muros, with its well renovated old quarter, kept its original image and today it is its symbol of identity that contrasts with the outrageous development carried out along the coast. The following stop is Ézaro, in the southern end of the Costa da Morte. The waterfall of O Ézaro is the only one in mainland Europe that flows into the sea, which makes it an unusual place worth visiting. The following stop along the way is at Fisterra, considered the end of the ancient world, where a visit to the lighthouse is useful to understand the perils that ships faced and still face when crossing these dangerous waters. After lunch the journey reaches its final stop: Muxía. This town synthesizes and combines the natural elements that form this zone: stone and water. Granite is present, either in the rocks on top of which the venerated sanctuary of Our Lady of the Boat stands, or in the famous balancing stone (pedra de abalar) or kidney stone (pedra dos cadrís), remnants of the ancient Galician litholatric worship. Even in the imposing sculpture to O Berro, stone expresses the feelings during that tragic November in 2002. After discovering Muxía, we return to Santiago de Compostela.
