Description

This urban pazo (mansion), once property of the Marquises of Bendaña, is the work of Clemente Fernández Sarela, and was finished in 1759. Although the style is Baroque, the harmony of Neoclasical outlines can be distinguished. On an irregular ground plan, it is built in granite masonry with four-sided slate roofs. The facade is structured in three segments. The upper of these shows noteworthy balconies with Compostela-made Baroque iron railings. The rest of the windows are arranged symmetrically with respect to the main door, framed by a system of moulding and volutes that break the horizontal design and austerity of the construction. The cornice is interrupted by the shield, which, in turn, is crowned with the statue of Atlas holding a sphere on his shoulders, referring to his mission of supporting the celestial vault, so it shows the sun and the stars engraved on it. In the 19th century, the skylights on the lower segment were converted into doors. The interior is arranged around the majestic open staircase with stone balustrade. On the upper floor, the large drawing room has a magnificent French-style fireplace.
