One of the more stunning ornithological shows in Europe

In the last years, urban birding is a trend that grows strongly

The reason is that most of the world population lives in cities where many birds have adapted to live successfully in this new environment. It is estimated that 20% of the bird species of the planet an be observed in urban environments.

Common swift (Apus apus)

What many people do not know is that one of the biggest urban birding spectacles we can see in Europe is in a Galician town, Lugo. It is well known for its magnificent Roman wall and it is precisely in the wall where thousands of common swifts nest and where we can watch them easily. It is an impressive educational, scientific and natural resource and it is an undoubted tourist attraction not yet known.

Common swift (Apus apus)

Each swift flight is an authentic aerial spectacle, both visual and sonorous, easily observable from the wall or from its vicinity. Just in these days, the swifts are busy flying to the nests to feed the young that are about to fly. In a few days, these fascinating birds will again fly to winter in Africa. They will not perch in months until they return to nest in the holes of the wall once more.

Common swift (Apus apus)

In addition to being a natural spectacle of the first order and accessible to the whole family, we must know that swifts are insectivorous birds that consume thousands and thousands of flying insects, thus their global impact on ecosystems is crucial.
