Description

The town of Cuntis celebrates a festival that combines the joy of the typical winter gastronomy with the last days of Carnival, which in this town of Pontevedrasymbolises the Enterro do Chapante (the Burial of Chapante).
The Festa do Lacón con Grelos in Cuntis is therefore something more than the enhancement of a gastronomic product, the lacón or pork shoulder, the Galician product par excellence which comes from the forelimbs of the pig. Since its inception in 1998, it has served to promote the town's rich cultural and natural heritage.
In this way, for some years now, it has been contributing to the recovery of the tradition of the “Enterro do Chapante” , the nickname given in the region to those originally from Cuntis. Like the Burial of the Sardine, a Spanish tradition held during Carnival in which a giant figure representing a sardine is burned while people eat grilled sardines, the funeral procession mourns the death of a character, the chapante, who is burned at the end.
So, in addition to being able to sample the delicious and nutritious lacón con grelos (pork shoulder with turnip greens. another basic ingredient of traditional Galician cuisine), accompanied by the equally traditional filloas or pancakes (also typical at this time of year), at the Cuntis Festa do Lacón con grelos visitors can enjoy the unique atmosphere of the Carnival, which usually includes a performance of the Alto de los Xenerais da Ulla.
Highlight:
The Enterro do Chapante.
