Ría de Ferrol

Ampliar
Ferrol´s estuary is shaped like a sea sword whose hilt would be the castles of San Felipe and A Palma. Then, the long blade extends all the way to Neda, at the mouth of the Xuvia river. With a naval past, the estuary of Ferrol was always a sword held high.
"Castillo de San Felipe prepara la artillería, que se acercan los ingleses por la boca de la Ría" (song urging the garrison to prepare its guns because the British are at the mouth of the estuary), sang the people of Ferrol back in 1800 after defeating the powerful British fleet in the Battle of Brión.
Ferrol is military power and urban elegance, like the Magdalena quarter, Europe's first to be designed following the Enlightenment's rationalist criteria. Or the Dockyards, also from the 18th century, and which are home to the Naval Museum.
Today however, after visiting Ferrol, the British prefer to stroll along A Graña, Fene, Neda. or cross the estuary by boat to Mugardos to taste its famous octopus. It is better than to risk passing by the castle of San Felipe.
