Romería Vikinga

The Viking Pilgrimage of Catoira is one of the most unique and well-known celebrations in Galicia.
Fair/Popular festival

The Viking Pilgrimage is celebrated in the Torres de Oeste, located on the banks of the Ulla River. The Vikings who arrived in Galicia in the 9th and 10th centuries with the intention of pillaging our lands were met with resistance from the troops of the Castellum Honesti, who during that time prevented the Norman armies and Saracen pirates from ascending the river, so much so that this fortress was considered the «Key and seal of Galicia».

After more than one thousand years, the tables have turned. Now the people of Catoire and the thousands of people arriving from all corners of the world gather around the Towers to welcome the barbarians. Violence, terror and hatred were turned into a fun celebration of coexistence in which the fearsome Nordic warriors peacefully invade the castle, and, this time, the setting is not blood but red wine from the Ulla river. Folk music and gastronomy are fundamental elements of this pilgrimage.

In a shop set in medieval times, visitors are offered a varied selection of products: mussels and squid are, of course, essential.
