Description

The Fragas do Eume are well worth a visit at any time of the year for the beauty of the landscapes that the river traces between leafy and steep slopes.
For many specialists, it is the only example of an Atlantic forest that remains in Europe and it is said that Lord Byron himself fell in love with the landscape when he saw the place where the Benedictine monks established the monastery of Caaveiro.
While Galicia celebrates its big day and Compostela its festivities of the Apostle, the 24th and 25th of July are for the residents of As Pontes and for the hundreds of visitors who come there for two days of uninterrupted festivities, even if some want to say that they can sleep in the huts they build on the banks of the river, in the Carballeira de Dona Rita.
The Romaría da Fraga began to be held at the beginning of the 20th century on an island in the Eume, then known as Romaría da Insua.
Today the island no longer exists, and the festival takes place in the park of the Carballeira de Dona Rita, at the entrance of the village.
In addition to the religious celebrations, a folk festival is held on the night of the 24th.

Highlights:
The wooden huts were built by the pilgrims on the banks of the Eume, in the Carballeira de Dona Rita.
