The city of the Miño and its long history of frontier life, often full of disputes over faraway interests, hides behind its short name. Tui and Valença are united by a single river, whose banks change colours on official maps. In truth, they are identically green and blue without banks.
The Episcopal city and capital of one of the provinces of the Ancient Kingdom of Galicia is well worth a visit on its own merits due to its historical district, which has been proposed as a World Heritage site. The tour of the monuments might begin from the central Paseo da Corredoira. The web of narrow and arcaded streets swirls around the Cathedral-Fortress which dominates the long curve of the river from above. The night-time illumination of the exterior walls gives an idea of the defensive appearance of the site.
Once in the cathedral, the importance of the west entrance, framed by a large ogival portico, is obvious. It has eight pairs of columns, each with their archivolts. The tympanum consists of magnificent reliefs that represent the adoration of the Magi at the top, and the adoration of the shepherds at the bottom.
In addition to the interior chapels, including the chapel in which the Cathedral Museum is located, one can also visit the Cloisters and the Torre de Soutomaior.
Other examples of religious art are the As Encerradas Convent of the Nuns of St Clare, which has a curious tunnel between its walls, the San Telmo´s Chapel, patron saint of the city and the Igrexa de Santo Domingo or the San Francisco Convent. The latter brings you back to the gardens of the Paseo da Corredoira with its excellent views of the Miño crossed downstream by two bridges, of which the first International Bridge over the river Miño is of note.
