The bridge consists of one large span arch over the river, and two shorter arches on land. Prior to the construction of the bridge, a boat was used for transport between Pontevedra and Poio, hence the name of the bridge ("barca" means boat in Spanish). The bridge is decorated with bas-reliefs on the lower part of its wide support pillars. A canopy on the footpaths of the bridge protects pedestrians from the winds and rains of winter.
