Description

Organized by the cultural association “Airiños do Xunco”, the Queimada Popular de Cervo gathers around 7,000 people in the villa. The square of O Souto is the scene where the preparation of the queimada (a drink made from brandy of pomace and sugar) takes place with a sorcerer dressed in straw in charge of pronouncing the esconxuro and driving away evil spirits.
Each year a story linked to traditions and legends of the area is staged at this festival, and always with the same plot: the triumph of good, represented by the witch, over evil, represented by witches, devils, goblins, and all the popular imagery of hell. As a sign of this victory and the restoration of good, the burning of the scarecrow takes place after the spell.
Until late at night, dancing and music accompany the tasting of the queimada, for which about 3,000 liters of brandy are used.

Highlights:
Parade of the forces of evil under the light of the torches from the Escolas Vellas to the Plaza de O Souto.
