Description

What is nothing more than a routine animal husbandry job, mane and tail clipping, horse deworming and iron branding foals born in the last year, becomes a spectacle and a popular pilgrimage in Galicia. In areas where horses are bred in freedom, as is the case in Boimente, the curros (rounding up horses into enclosures also called curros) or rapas das bestas (Shearing of the Beasts) attract a large audience eager for excitement every year. The one in Candaoso, in a spot from which you can see the Viveiro estuary, Coelleira Island and Estaca de Bares, is one of the best known in Galicia. As an ancient tradition, the curros maintain many of the rites of wrangling animals to domesticate them, and offer an authentic show, filled with strength and emotions, centred around the bravery of men and the fury of the stallions. The hard work of the ranchers is rewarded with wine, empanadas and all kinds of food that are prepared around the curros to the sound of bagpipes, and the enjoyment of traditional horse races in different categories.

Highlight:
Horse races, with prizes for the winners, in the afternoon.
