In the middle of the Cantabrian Sea, the sea blends with the mouth of the río Landro and forms the Viveiro estuary. The estuary is sprinkled with beautiful coves and beaches such as Area or Covas (which measures 1.5 km), many awarded with the Blue Flag. The estuary is also very appropriate for scuba diving, because in addition to unique marine fauna and flora, in Viveiro's estuary there are more than 30 sunken ships, some of which are the remains of a terrible naval battle which took place during the War of Independence.
