Description

More than 50 percent of the fish that arrive at the fishing port of Celeiro, one of the most important in Galicia, are hake, so it is not surprising that this product is the star of a gastronomic festival that receives thousands of visitors the weekend before July 25th. Since the end of the '90s, the port's old fish market has been hosting the tasting of this exquisite white fish caught in the traditional way. More than 2,000 portions are distributed in this important gastronomic event in A Mariña Occidental, in which music and the traditional queimada (Galician punch) flow freely.

The hake fish can be tasted with succulent recipes such as the special "Penalba", Galician style, in caldeirada or in green sauce, as well as in empanadas. The Penalba association is in charge of organizing the festival, in which the Fishermen's Association and the Viveiro City Council collaborate. Celeiro's skewered hake was incorporated into the Galicia Quality denomination in 2003, thus becoming the first fresh product from the sea protected in Spain by a guarantee seal.

Highlight: The special “Penalba” hake.
