In the time of the Emperor Trajan the Romans already knew of the gold in the River Sil. They therefore dug a huge wall of exceptional strength to create the Montefurado tunnel. This is an important work of engineering because when the river began to flow through it, abandoning its original course, it became easier to extract the gold from the old river bed.
