The power of water was the source of energy needed to start up the heavy stone machinery that made up the mill and converted the grains of corn and wheat into precious flour. They are normally associated with the banks of mighty rivers in the heart of forests; however, in this case the location is unusual, as the five mills of Ardeleiro are built on a steep area by the ocean, using the waters of the Rego dos Muíños stream.
