Description

Held on the last Saturday in August, the Noite Meiga is one of the most distinctive cultural celebrations in the province of Lugo. Organised by the Asociación Cultural Meigas e Trasgos, the event brings together thousands of people every year to celebrate a tradition combining legend, symbolism, music, fire and community participation.

Its origins date back to the late 1960s and are closely linked to the association’s work to recover and promote Galicia’s intangible heritage. The centrepiece of the celebrations is the iconic Danza da Noite Meiga, an original creation inspired by the mythical world of Galician tradition.

The festival reaches its most spectacular moment after nightfall, when torches, traditional music, dance and theatrical elements transform the Parque do Chanto into a truly unique setting. The programme runs throughout the weekend and includes concerts, children’s activities and the traditional Andaina dos Fachos. The festival’s main events take place on Saturday, including the community dinner, the opening address and the iconic Danza da Noite Meiga, one of Sarria’s most distinctive and recognisable traditions.

Nowadays, the Noite Meiga is one of Sarria’s main cultural hallmarks and one of the most representative celebrations of Galician popular culture, keeping alive a tradition that brings together history, community participation and cultural heritage.
