Description

At the start of the patron saint festivities, on Saturday night a parade of local carts pulled by oxen takes place in Chantada, on which various scenes of traditional trades and agricultural work are represented. Enlivened by the performance of bagpipers and bands, this sample of popular ethnography has its origin in the Middle Ages, in the times in which the guilds abandoned their traditional isolation for a day and toured the town together. By parading on their own cart, the craftsmen were proof of their existence and their value in the social organisation of the time.
Millers, zoqueiros (clog makers), carpenters, spinners... are some of the trades portrayed, as well as agricultural work with a deep tradition in Chantada, such as the grape harvest. All the popular culture of this land is made manifest in this cart parade. It is customary to wet the cart’s axles so that the shrill acoustics of its "song" fills the atmosphere during its journey.
The parade is followed by the traditional proclamation of the festivities and the verbena in the Plaza de Santa Ana.
