Camelias, Tropicales

«Philosophy amongst the foliage ». Euripides would be in his element here.

In the depths of tropical Galicia, on the banks of the river Miño, the gardens of Pazo de Pegullal are laid out in geometrical fashion, though the design is promptly camouflaged by the exuberant vegetation. In this setting, which seems to have come out of an ancient engraving, visitors are encouraged to dwell upon the transcendental side of life, amidst the box woodland and hidden nooks and crannies. Explore the disturbing privacy of the maze: mysterious paths, half-hidden to the eye, help to bring on a reflective mood.

Pegullal evokes the very best of the old world; while its design is typically Italian Renaissance, it also seeks the balance of classicism. The gardens run from one side of the house to the other without losing any of their synchrony. Impeccable hedges and ponds stretch out, in contrast to the irregular façade. When viewed as a whole, the scene transmits a serenity that is anything but static, and it is the garden itself that prevents that from happening, thanks to the magnolias, the gardenias and the wisteria that blush red in April.

Then there are the thousands of sparks of light that gambol in the fountains, and the echoes of water spurring out of the gargoyles, all of which creates a succession of landscapes of perfumes, colours, shapes and sounds that cannot remain still for a moment. Every comer is transformed according to the whim of the day or the hour, sometimes outrageously, others discreetly.

With shameless Mediterranean self-assurance, a fig tree that is shot through with sunlight raises its branches in a victory sign. At the very top, we can see a palm tree swaying. Quince, pomegranate and lemon trees pay no heed to the fact that St Benito is watching over them from his chapel. In fact, for the past 600 years, the saint has been jealously guarding his oak tree, threatening to ruin the health of anyone who dares to lop off the smallest branch. And he's been successful, as in this region at least, no-one has dared to do so.
