Description

The Romaría de Santa Minia de Brión and its eve celebrations take place every year on 27 September in the carballeira (oak grove) of the same name. The date of the third day of festivities depends on the day of the week on which the 27th falls and may therefore be either 25 or 28 September. This pilgrimage festival is the most important event and the main tourist attraction in our municipality, as well as one of the leading events in the Santiago comarca. Since it was first held in 1848, it has attracted thousands of pilgrims from all corners of Galicia to Brión every year. All of this is made possible by the involvement of the local community, as well as the pilgrims and tourists who attend the festival each year. Over the years, the pilgrimage has also become a culinary gathering centred on enjoying octopus.
The Romaría de Santa Minia stands out for three key aspects:
- Religious: the saint’s reputation for working miracles draws thousands of pilgrims to Brión every year to take part in the celebrations;
- Culinary: over the years, eating octopus at Santa Minia de Brión has become a firmly established tradition throughout the surrounding area;
- Cultural and recreational: the fireworks on the eve of the festival, performances by renowned Galician music groups, orchestras, Brión’s traditional music and dance schools, and a band festival. Theatre performances. Monecadas Festival.
